EAL

At Weald, we are proud to be a diverse and inclusive school. Many of our children speak more than one language, and we value the rich cultural and linguistic experiences they bring to our community. Our aim is to ensure that every child who speaks English as an Additional Language feels confident, supported and able to thrive in all areas of school life.

How We Support EAL Learners

We provide a range of support to help children develop their English language skills while continuing to celebrate and build upon their home language. This includes:

  • High‑quality classroom teaching with clear modelling, visuals and structured language support

  • Vocabulary and language scaffolds to support speaking, listening, reading and writing

  • Use of visual aids, bilingual resources and technology to aid understanding

  • Close monitoring of progress to ensure children receive the right level of support

  • Collaboration with families to share strategies and celebrate multilingualism

Using The Bell Foundation Framework

To ensure our support is consistent, effective and evidence‑based, we use The Bell Foundation EAL Assessment Framework. This helps us:

  • Assess a child’s English language proficiency

  • Identify strengths and next steps across speaking, listening, reading and writing

  • Plan targeted support that meets each learner’s needs

  • Track progress over time and celebrate achievements

The framework provides a clear, structured approach that enables us to understand each child’s language development and tailor provision accordingly.

Working in Partnership with Families

We recognise that parents and carers play a vital role in supporting language development. We encourage families to:

  • Continue using and celebrating their home language

  • Share cultural traditions, stories and experiences with the school

  • Talk to us about any support their child may need

We are always happy to meet with families to discuss progress and answer questions.

Celebrating Language and Culture

Throughout the year, we celebrate the many languages spoken in our school through:

  • Multicultural events and themed days

  • Storytelling and reading activities

  • Classroom projects exploring different cultures

  • Opportunities for children to share their language with others

Our aim is to help every child feel proud of who they are and where they come from.
