Modern Foreign Languages
At Weald Community Primary School, our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum is shaped by our whole school vision: “In our school, we smile, share and shine together. Through character, we learn to think for ourselves, help each other, and grow into kind, confident people. Everyone belongs, everyone matters, and together we make our school a happy place to be.”
We believe that learning a foreign language opens doors to the wider world and empowers our pupils to become confident, curious and compassionate global citizens. In MFL, we smile as we enjoy new sounds and cultures, we share language and experiences with one another, and we shine by developing the communication skills needed for an ever-changing world.
Our MFL curriculum promotes independence, resilience, and collaboration. Through engaging teaching, children learn to think for themselves, make connections across languages, and develop strategies that help them understand and communicate with others. By exploring diverse cultures, pupils learn to appreciate difference, celebrate diversity, and show kindness and respect—helping each other grow into thoughtful, confident young people. MFL helps every child feel that they belong in a multicultural world, and that they matter as a learner and as a global citizen.
In line with the National Curriculum for Primary Schools, our MFL provision ensures that all pupils:
- Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- Speak with increasing confidence, fluency, and spontaneity, improving pronunciation and communication
- Write at varying length for different purposes and audiences
- Develop a solid foundation for learning further languages at Key Stage 3
We aim to foster a lifelong love of languages by providing rich, meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences. Through songs, stories, conversation and cultural exploration, children build the skills and enthusiasm to continue learning languages beyond primary school.
Ultimately, our MFL vision is to ensure that every child at Weald Community Primary School grows into a kind, confident communicator, ready to play their part in a diverse and connected world—truly smiling, sharing and shining together.
